When Cape Town was crowned the best city in the world by the Telegraph Travel Awards for the seventh time in eleven years, we weren’t surprised. With over 20,000 readers casting their votes, our hometown edged out great cities like Seville, Sydney and Tokyo yet again.
Why Cape Town is The World’s Best City
It isn’t just the Instagram-worthy views. Sure, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront stands out with Table Mountain as its backdrop and Camps Bay’s beaches turn gold at sunset. But what sets Cape Town apart is the local passion behind every experience. From adventurous days exploring iconic sites to leisurely afternoons sipping vintages in Stellenbosch, Constantia and Franschhoek, our city delivers on every level.
We’ll admit we’re biased, but there really is no place quite like this. James Vos, Cape Town’s MMC for economic growth, put it perfectly: our win is the result of “serious graft, smart thinking and a whole lot of local passion.” In partnership with Cape Town Tourism, our community works hard to share these one-of-a-kind moments with visitors from around the globe.
A Second Top Spot in 2025
If you thought a seventh Telegraph win was enough to brag about, Cape Town also claimed first place in Time Out magazine’s 2025 survey. Out of 18,500 votes, locals and travellers rated us on food, culture, affordability, happiness and overall vibe. We rose from second place in 2024 to the very top (and it’s easy to see why!).
You can spend a day watching African penguins waddle along Boulders Beach, explore the creative corners of the CBD, then wander into a tucked-away café in District Six that becomes your new favourite spot. Almost nine out of ten Capetonians rated the city as beautiful, and nearly everyone admits it makes them happy. That sense of joy is contagious, whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a lekker holiday.
